Shadowing allows current students to observe a day-in-the-life of a professional. Students will connect to a professional in their desired career field and will be exposed to a real world experience of a company or organization. The professionals can share their experience, expertise or behind-the-scenes activities, providing insight into the transition from the classroom to the professional world.
Students will be enlightened with an idea of the work environment, the feel of a job, possibly the interactions among coworkers and clients, and the communication methods most commonly used in the workplace.
Shadowing experiences can last for a half day to a full day or just for an hour. However, some professions (such as physical therapy) often allow for longer observation experiences in order for students to meet certain educational requirements. Expectations regarding purpose and length of the shadowing experience should be clearly discussed by the student and professional prior to the experience.
